In a Flemish eye the splice carries the load and the sleeve holds the tail. That is why slings are made this way.
ARG Industrial Flemish Eye Sleeve, Size: 1/2 in, Material: Steel, Material Construction: Carbon Steel, For Use With: 6 x 19 or 6 x 37, IPS or XIP (EIP), XXIP (EEIP), RRL, FC or IWRC Wire Rope A carbon steel sleeve for a Flemish eye (mechanical splice) termination in 1/2 in wire rope. The rope is unlaid, re-formed into a loop and re-laid so the two halves interlock, then the sleeve is pressed over the tail. A properly made Flemish eye with a pressed sleeve is the standard high-efficiency sling eye - the sleeve holds the tail, but the interlocked strands carry the load, which is why it does not fail catastrophically if the sleeve slips.
