The coating is protective and cosmetic only - it adds no strength, and the published breaking strength is that of the bare 1/8 in core. The jacket keeps the cable from marking what it runs against and hides the wire, which is why it is specified for railing, gym and playground equipment, and exposed architectural runs. PVC service range is approximately -20 deg F to +150 deg F.
